What makes a successful leader?
The answer depends on many factors, but there are attributes that I consistently see among the successful leaders I work with around the globe. As you read through these attributes, consider how you measure up.
These five qualities differentiate world-class leaders from those who simply aspire to be world-class.
1. Optimistic growth mindset
A successful leader always has a mindset that leans towards optimism and growth. This means they look for positives in all situations, no matter how dire. They are enablers, removing roadblocks to allow their teams to succeed and stretch their wings. They act as multipliers, not diminishers, helping their teams to grow and achieve more.
2. Courage and boldness
Great leaders are courageous and bold. They achieve success because they prove that they can step up to the plate and do what needs to be done in any circumstance. They are not afraid to have difficult discussions and make deliberate decisions without hesitation. I see many leaders waffle and delay decision-making, which can be detrimental. If you’re wondering what makes a successful leader, it is someone who makes decisions and acts on them without much hesitation.
3. Great communicators and connectors
Effective leaders are excellent communicators and connectors. Whether they’re in a small group or a room full of people, these professionals can connect with their audience and take people on a journey. Another attribute is their ability to show that they care before expecting others to care about what they say. You will probably recall a leader who was a great storyteller, engaging their audience and making their messages memorable.
4. Strong work ethic
Good leadership isn’t only about delegating. Successful leaders have a strong work ethic and show up as diligent and disciplined workers. They maintain routines and rituals that keep them focused and productive, even under pressure. The best leaders go the extra mile, doing what others might not be willing to do to achieve their goals.
5. Drive and passion
Drive and passion are essential to consider when asking what makes a successful leader. Leaders with a strong sense of purpose know what they want and have high expectations. The aim is to demonstrate executive excellence and maintain a world-class mentality. Having drive and passion pushes them to perform at their best.
Are you a successful leader?
Want to improve your own status as a boss, coach or leader? Think about how you would score yourself in these five attributes on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Avoid choosing a 5 as it indicates sitting on the fence. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you score a 7 in having a growth mindset, think about what you need to do to move that score to an 8. Small improvements can make a big difference over time.
Once you have identified your scores, consider what three things you can do to improve. Focus on one action you can take today to start moving the needle. Consistent action is key to making progress. Remember, improvement takes time and effort, but with discipline and determination, you can enhance your leadership qualities.
Remember, change is constant, and adapting to it is crucial as a leader. Contact us for help on your journey.
